Originator A Cassandra Kresnov Novel Joel Shepherd Books

As a straight science-fiction the book is a solid four stars, but I give it five because it introduces a novel idea that has parallels in our current society. First, the story. This is the sixth novel in the Cassandra Kresnov series. She is an android/synthetic human/whatever with essentially superhuman strength, reflexes, and computer networking capabilities. This general setup can be boring, but the writer has made the character appealing and has obviously given tremendous thought and planning to this series. There is also a good job at sketching the 'world' the story takes place in and has other interesting characters. The descriptive writing is good and the action sequences engaging. On the negative, there are too many action sequences, Cassandra and her allies skate through so many fights where they kill herds of both human and other synthetics that I found myself starting to speed-read through some of them. A major negative about the writing style of the author is that the view of who is talking/thinking shifts in mid-paragraph such that the reader isn't sure who is being referenced - making the reader stop, go back, and sometimes have to assume who is the speaker. This got definitely annoying. Still, overall a definitely superior piece of work and well worth the read.

What gives the book an extra star is the idea that when humans are networked too much they can tend to be subject to "Compulsive Narrative Syndrome," where when they get most of their information from a single viewpoint, the brain physiologically gets locked into ignoring contradictory information even when presented to the person. I don't know if the author intended to draw current parallels, but I certainly drew it when considering our current media and political situation. All of us likely know people who NEVER watch Foxnews because it's so conservative, and only watch MSNBC - or vice versa. I believe I remember a liberal columnist from the New Times writing how confused she was when Bush II got elected because of the hundreds of people she personally knew, not one had voted for Bush. What was striking was that it never seemed to occur to her that there was ANY other political view except the one she had. Such people sure fit the description of CNS in the book. Same with considering Islamic extremists and suicide bombers - people who have been indoctrinated for so long and so much that they seem irrational - and may well be. In the book, CNS can be untreatable, the victim never able to break out of a physiological/neurological box - a sobering thought for our current world.

Originator A Cassandra Kresnov Novel Joel Shepherd Books Reviews

Aliens, synthetic humans, space ships, robots, planets in peril, lasers, solid plot with a purpose, new families, series questions answered and surprising revelations all neatly tied together. Feels like book six sets up possible new directions for the series rather than ends it. Hopefully.
Great Kresnov book but hopefully not the end. As a standalone novel it is a very fun novel and more of the enjoyable work Mr. Shepherd has accustomed us to but has a pretty weak ending that I hope is not supposed to represent the end of the serie.
This is real SF. Big concepts, hard questions...things that make you re-examine how you view the world. Commander Kresnov manages to be more human than many of the 'organics' and faces real tests of her character.

I don't really recommend you start here if you have never read from the series. But it does fill in the blanks as you go along.

I don't anticipate another book in this universe, but I would pre-order today if one was offered for next year.
More Kresnov is only a good thing I love this series and this is a great nail bitter in true Shepherd Fashion. For fans of the series this is a must have. new comers should consider starting with Crossover or at least 23 years on fire. The series does sometimes seem to be weighed down by the political theory that the main characters sprout as though discussing the intricacies of TV Drama episode, but it never seems to detract from the central story or pacing.

Recommendation
Value - Well placed for its length and spot at the end of a series
Re=Readability - Very high if we get another Kresnov novel, otherwise i might not read this again.
Would i recommend it - For fans of this series, absolutely. For people who might not have heard of Shepherd of Cassandra Kresnov i recommend picking up Crossover.
Cassandra Kresnov comes through again! This, the sixth book in the series is fast paced and gives an additional layer to both the Human created super soldiers and the Humans they fight for and against. This wraps up most of the loose ends that have been dangling from the first five novels.
We now have an alien race who have their own agenda in the continuing struggle between the League and Federation. And the Federation has their own factions who have their own agendas. Possible future books could expound or involve other alien races who are on the horizon.
Joel Shepherd is simply an excellent writer. His work is dense, dripping with intention, gripping in its creativity. To enjoy this book, one ought to have read the ones that precede it, for he offers little in the way of "catch-up", but that means that there's little standing in the way of his presentation. His city of Tanusha is one of the singular inventions of SciFi, for which he deserves acclaim. His characters learn, grow and mature, as does the culture of which they are a part. He hits all the right notes for the PolyMilSciFi genre, but I enjoy reading (and rereading) his work because it is thought and emotion provoking on many levels. He has created something spectacular with this series, and with this book he has outdone his prior efforts. Wonderful.
The ending was a bit anti-climactic; if this was the end of the whole series, then double the negative points. Otherwise, another very solid Kresnov novel in a great series. This is one of my favorite series because of the intersection of computer security, physical/military security, and political philosophy. Quite a realistic future setting with strong characters reacting in realistic and realistically-unpredictable ways, just like real people. -)
