Violet Parry is living the quintessential life of luxury in the Hollywood Hills with David, her rock-and-roll manager husband, and her darling toddler, Dot. She has the perfect life except that she's deeply unhappy. David expects the world of Violet but gives little of himself in return. When she meets Teddy, a roguish small-time bass player, Violet comes alive, and soon she's risking everything for the chance to find herself again. Also in the picture are David's hilariously high-strung sister, Sally, on the prowl for a successful husband, and Jeremy, the sportscaster savant who falls into her trap.

First of all, to all the comments out there that the book is a "fun summer read", "great for the beach or travel" - have you read this book? It's not fun at all. It's intense, tragic, ugly, it may be sarcastic at times, but fun?!Well, I did like it, despite of the tossed like a salad plot and the unnecessary pornographic action (although, really, who was actually shocked in this day and age?). The way Maria Semple approaches people amazes me. No matter how ugly or self-destructive they are, she has this underlying empathy for them, and she makes you love them. The ending was the saddest I've read in quite a while; am I the only one feeling that way? The last sentence is brilliant. I wish the author backed up the main character better to make us see why everyone loved her so much, but nevertheless it floored me, this desperate and pathetic - so much - love.
All in all the book disturbed me, and unnerved me, and made me angry all the time! But isn't that what books do? It can't all be pleasantry. And yes, I did read "Bernadette" before this one and loved it. "Bernadette" is more polished, the plot is rock-solid, the characters are all lovable, even the villains. This one is sadder, uglier and more adult. But it is worth reading. Why does disliking the characters lead to disliking the book, I really don't get. Give it a chance, keep an open mind. If all else fails, you'll be able to say you witnessed the author's growth :) I can't wait for the next one.

This One is Mine Maria Semple 9781780221939 Books Reviews
If you've never read a Maria Semple book - you're missing out. She is funny, smart and creative with her writing. I enjoy a story with flawed characters - if that's not your thing, then she's not for you. She paints a remarkable picture of imperfect people living in an imperfect world in all of her books.
At first I wasn’t sure! I stayed with it because sometimes it’s not the book you’re reading that makes you doubt, but the actual events surrounding you as you start to read. So, as my mind cleared and I could totally focus on the book, I really got into it and didn’t want to stop reading it. I thought it was very good. We read it as a book club book. Some didn’t like the ending. Thought it left you hanging. I thought the ending was PERFECT.
I read the Maris Semple book out of order. I picked up her latest book in the airport to read on the plane and I loved it! When I got home from my trip I ordered this, her first, and her second book. I read this book after reading her latest book and I wasn't sure how I felt about it....I then read her second book, Where'd You Go Bernadette, and loved this one most of all! I fear if you read this one first...you may not want to read the others. I am looking forward to her next work.
Not badly written, I just hate the story. It has some interesting parts but overall UGH. One of the few books I'd rather throw away than pass on to someone else. That said, her other book, Bernadette, is amazing. "Where'd You Go, Bernadette" is one of my favorites. So there you go.
While I like this writer, Where'd You Go, Bernadette, is a much better book. I bought this one after I read the Bernadette book. This book has some similar themes, but much didn't make sense (why would she hook up with an utter loser with no apparent redeeming qualities?) so it was disconcerting at times because some things had no logic to them. Also, the characters in this book were not nearly as likeable as the ones in Bernadette, for whom I was able to conjure some sympathy. I do like her writing style.
This was the first book of Maria Semple's that I ever read, and I was immediately taken with her writing and how nuanced and neurotic all of her characters were -- you can always relate to them in some way, whether or not you've ever actually been in their current situation. I love a book that makes me feel like I really *know* them, and Semple has a wonderful knack for that. It's because of this book that I am a devoted fan of any and all of her work. (Which I hope there will be MUCH more of in the future!)
I love Maria Semple's Where'd You Go Bernadette so I decided to read all her books. This one is just plain terrible. None of the characters are remotely likeable so there's really nobody to root for. I only finished it so that I wouldn't have to think about it anymore. It's a collection of shallow people who aren't very nice to each other. Even the main character, who is supposed to be loveably eccentric in the same vein as Bernadette, is not admirable or sympathetic in any way.
The other thing I was really disturbed by was the way autism is portrayed. The autistic boy who sucks the joy out of his parents' lives and ruins every situation. I won't mention the other situation because it would spoil the plot, but let's just reiterate very disturbing.
I kept waiting for some sort of redemption for these characters, but ugh.
If you loved Bernadette and want to try one of her other books, Today Will Be Different is a better choice.
