The Night Tiger A Novel Yangsze Choo 9781250175458 Books

This book had me hooked by the end of the second short chapter, and apparently I don’t have much willpower, as I devoured the rest in a 24-hour period. The brisk pacing and mystery box format, with deftly handled multiple points of view, are addictive. The main protagonist, Ji Lin, is endearing, as is the houseboy Ren, and I found myself rooting for each through all the twists and turns of their adventures. This is easily my favorite of all the new books I’ve read in the past year. (And no, I did not receive a free advance copy—bought this for myself and am glad I did!)

The Night Tiger A Novel Yangsze Choo 9781250175458 Books Reviews

I was so thrilled to read this book by Yangsze Choo after reading her other book called "The Ghost Bride".
Today, I read "The NIght Tiger" and I could not put it down, and marathon-ed it in 12 hours!

From the first chapter until the end the story continues to get better and better. Each chapter revealing more of the story to be completed like a perfect puzzle at the end.

Already, reading first chapter the book grabbed me tight....
A dying man whispers something to a boy ......
"Remember"
The boy nods.
"Say it." The hoarse rasp is fading.
"When you are dead, I will find your missing finger," Ren replies in a clear, small voice.
"And?"
He hesitates. "And bury it in your grave"
"Good" The old man draws a rattling breath. "You must get it back before the forty-nine days of my soul are over".................

From that moment, I was not only intrigued by the story, but how wonderful it was written.
Yangsze Choo is one of these authors that transforms pages written into a magical story line, full of mystery, paranormal and spectacular journey.

I can't wait until her next book is in print and I was totally enchanted and honored to read this one! YOU WILL TOO!

(I was selected to read this book for an honest review)
Briefly, the story involves several themes that pertain specifically to the areas of Malaysia and surrounding Chinese culture. Superstitions, interactions with the imperialist workers, danger of adjacent wildlife, and expectations for different age groups in the 1930s, to name a few. It's fascinating.

The storyline and integration of these themes are complex without being unapproachable. The complicated nature of the superstition that serves as the basis is slowly revealed without hand holding.

So often, a colonial / imperial historical fiction can carry such a heavy agenda that it is annoying to read. When that happens, it's also ironically all about the white man the author is trying to critique, preventing the "locals" from creating their own identity. In those cases, it's still like "The White Man's Burden," though the objective is to criticize that sentiment. This one just tells a great story, with plenty of depth for learning about imperialism, the era, and how the cultures worked together or clashed.

Spoiler the love story within this was so well-handled. It felt like an authentic progression of feelings and exposure of the foundation for love. The characters developed within the story, as well as revealed their past development as the story moved.

It's just so creative, I'm definitely going to have a book hangover after this one. I hope the author quickly writes another so I have something good to read.
I read this in one sitting. It took me to another time and place, and I couldn't put it down. And when I reached the end, I had to go back and read it a second time--this time slowly, savoring all my favorite moments.

I also read The Ghost Bride, and I enjoyed this one more.
This was such an interesting story line and glimpse into Malaysian culture. This is definitely book club worthy - truly fascinating.
Could not put it down. I swapped between the audio and the kindle and finished it in one go. Even better than the Ghost Bride. Yangsze has the native's grasp of her place, and the time could be from grandparent's tales. But the mystery had me going to the end! The romance was very realistically nuanced as well.
Interesting plot, like able characters and I must have liked it because I want a sequel. Learning about other cultural beliefs threaded into a suspenseful story.
