This is my favorite Chesney/Beaton series and this story is excellent! The references to Amy Tribble's mysterious and temporary feelings of questionable sanity (due to menopause which Amy is clueless about) are hilarious! She fights a duel, fights with her sister at a ball and hits a duke on the head with a bottle. Yikes! Just a heads-up, Amy's language is extremely coarse in this book in particular and she uses a** and b***h once or twice when tossing insults at annoying people.

Maria is the Tribble sister's new client, and while on her way to London she meets the Duke of Berham at an Inn where he has commandeered her second bedchamber and her private parlor. As the innkeeper repeats to her, 'because he is a duke and she is a nobody!' Maria is furious and confronts the duke about her displeasure with his treatment of her. So begins a series of events where the duke ends up behaving very badly towards Maria and keeps adding to her dislike of him. He prides himself on his politeness, and realizes he's been less than a gentleman to Maria and wants to apologize. Due to the duke's mother's machinations, they end up betrothed and decide to pursue a marriage of convenience. But could this develop into a love match?

Things look promising until the duke meets Maria's "vulgar, pushing, mushroom" parents. The hilarious dinner scene is not to be missed! He does not want to be associated with such people and offers to pay the Tribbles to extricate him from the betrothal. But the Tribbles want to maintain their reputation as matchmakers extraordinaire and want Maria to to be happy, so instead they contrive to make over Maria's parents to be acceptable in society and to the duke.

Meanwhile, Maria and the duke find a common interest in improving the lives of the duke's tenants who live in a rookery he owns. They dream of developing a sweet village for the poverty stricken as well as developing a home for unwed mothers where they can learn a trade and earn a living. Chesney's social commentary on poverty is very interesting. Some of it is tongue-in-cheek in regards to how callous some people can be and that being "normal." Of course she's trying to point out the ridiculousness of such callousness. But more importantly to the story, Maria and the Duke of Berham fall in love over their shared desire to help others in need. But the road to true love never runs smooth.... How will they overcome the new objections of Maria's parents?

** Clean romance with a few passionate kisses.

Ml. C. Beaton makes her stories of old England come to life. She describes the fashions and the story lines are wonderful.
Ms. Beaton has it down pat--the rolling and serene landscapes, the peaceful country life, the tumultuous time of adolescence and budding adulthood, restrained, yet passionate undercurrents of romance, beautiful heroines and handsome gentlemen.
Great book,I especially enjoyed the Duke visiting the Kendalls to ask for Maria,s hand. Much humor to brighten my day.
All of M.C. books are delightful quick reads. Excellent historical references to society, dress, décor, and morals of the time period. Highly recommend her books. There is romance that follows the strict acceptable mores of the period.
Marion Chesney always includes an outrageous, comical character or two in her stories, and the Tribble sisters provide the comic relief in Animating Maria. This story is pure Ms. Chesney at her best. It's very entertaining.
Old stories written by dead authors, new stories written by authors still alive, can be just as good to read today as they were when written. Reading about Regency England is my favorite time period to enjoy. I picked this story because the author's style of storytelling matches my reading interest level. An easy story for an easy read.
This one wasn't quite as good as the previous 4 but it still gets full marks for being a cut above. I feel like this book was merely a transition book since the next book is the final in the series and will bring all the threads together in a grand finale. It does not do justice to the hero and heroine of the piece who were very interesting characters who were never quite developed to their full potential. They really deserved to have their own book so that the thawing hero could fully reap the rewards of his emerging humanity and our dreamy heroine could finish growing up and enjoy each moment for itself. The sisters were their usual fun selves. Amy is such a great gun, I feel bad that Effy gets all the credit when it really is Amy who does all the refining and has all the feminine delights, Effy just looks the part. Still, a good book but I only recommend it as part of the whole series, this one does not particularly stand alone well.
